The Unvarnished ReportConducting an RCT of a Statewide STEM Program in the Process of Scaling Up

We conducted a large scale randomized control trial to evaluate the effectiveness of the Alabama Math Science and Technology Initiative (AMSTI). The report, conducted under our contract with the Regional Education Laboratory, Southeast, funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences (IES), was released in 2012 by IES after considerable technical review, editing, and formatting. We call this the varnished version.

Rebecca Maynard and Larry Hedges asked us if we would contribute a chapter to their book (provisional title: Teaching Cases on Designing and Fielding Experimental Design Evaluations in Education). This chapter delves into a number of the nuts and bolts issues and lessons-learned in conducting this study and provides an unvarnished version of the story. Since the book release has been delayed, Becca was kind enough to allow us to share this report with our readers.
